Unprecious Instrument

Join us to learn the basics of building, playing and improvising with a unique rudimentary stringed instrument. Side-stepping restrictive barriers to making music – too expensive, too complicated – in this workshop we will learn how to build a unique instrument.

We will begin with a deep listening walk around Thamesmead, engaging with TACO!’s sonic environment and foraging for scrap wood. Focusing on process not outcomes, we will learn to use piano wire, tuning pins and a few simple hand tools to create our own weird, stringed things. Then, with contact mics, effects and amplification we will explore ways of improvising together, learning to play and perform as we go. The workshop will conclude with a public live performance, with participants guided by Haddow.

The workshop and performance will take place at TACO! 2 Cygnet Square SE2 9FA.

Tickets prices are offered on a sliding scale. All workshop materials provided. There is a cafe and bar serving food and refreshments.

He makes work that thinks about place and time, using accessible materials and techniques to draw attention to material or personal details and experiences. He composes and performs under the depersonalised alias Haddow, improvising with varying sound sources, directly or indirectly, to create soundscapes as a kind of crystallised memory. TACO! is an artist-led space for research, production and exchange located in Thamesmead, SE London. TACO!’s activities are experimental and collaborative, centering the work and role of artists with no set expectations on outcomes. They have a public programme of exhibitions, events, discussions, workshops, screenings, publishing and co-authored participatory projects. TACO! comprises a gallery and event space, a bookshop and a broadcast studio at Cygnet Square, and a production studio and workspace at Poplar Place. They run RTM.FM, a community radio station providing a sonic platform for artists, musicians and producers. TACO! is led and run by artists Mat Jenner, Natasha Bird and Gina Prat Lilly.
